《STEAM Education in Singapore》Turner Lam
In the beginning of the speech, Turner asked the audience, ‘’When it comes to Singapore, what comes up on your mind?’’ Some students replied immediately, ‘’ Strict Education.’’ Then, Turner demonstrated some apparent features such as Merlion park, Singaporean food to briefly introduce his hometown, Singapore.
Not long after, Turner continued introducing Singapore, ‘’We are a country dependent on trade, and we don't have many natural resources, almost everything is imported. Additionally, we aim to be first in everything.’’
Turner described Singapore while audience were nodding their head. It seemed that whatever Turner just mentioned almost correspond to most audience’s impression with Singapore.
Next, Turner explained the educational system in Singapore, leading the audience to go through the Singapore education journey together. The system has been described as ‘’world-leading’’ educational system. However,at the same time, Turner also reported that there were some challenges of the system. ‘’We are exam-oriented, and the learning environment is really competitive, so each student has to push himself very hard. And that is the reason why most students are under stress.’’
Then, Turner shared ALP (Applied Learning Programme), which focus on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. (STEM) Turner said,’’ As an educator, I believe knowledge is driven by value, so what teacher could do is to create the environment where students are trained to collaborate the resources in hand.’’ As Turner believed, beyond imparting knowledge, through ALP this type of education, students can uncover innate talents and develop resilience, to resolve the future issue.
In the end of the speech, Turner emphasized, ‘’I believe knowledge is driven by value.’’ and simultaneously invited anyone who interested in ALP to join his team.
