Timothly Teo《Teachers of the Future》

In the beginning of the speech, speaker invited the audience to imagine and write down two things which they would expect their teachers to do.

Soon, the speaker collected all the notes from the audience, chose a few notes to read out. Most audiences expect that the teachers could be more ‘’patient’’ and ‘’interesting’’.
Not long after, speaker introduced the learning environment of the future,‘’ The pace of change is staggering, the children of the future are truly globalized world, so personalization of learning will be emphasized to engage students in diverse and creative ways.’’ Then, speaker showed a diagram to explain the core knowledge which 21st century learners should be equipped with.

Speaker asked the audience whether they agree with the knowledge showed on the diagram. ‘’ I agree with the creativity & innovation meta knowledge, because, in the future, most situation for which we weren’t specifically prepared, we should be innovative enough to resolve the difficulties.’’
After letting the audience realize that education change happens on a massive scale, the speaker described the teachers of the future. First, he played a video clip. This video clip suggested that a teacher who really cares about their children’s future shouldn't only focus on textbooks. Additionally, the speaker also shared the essential characteristics of 21st century teacher with the audience. ‘’As an educator, we should equip with many important traits, such like a relationship builder, a leader, a designer, storyteller and so on.’’

In the end of the speech, speaker asked, ‘’ What is the main difference between teachers and students? ’’A girl replied,’’ A good teacher will know how to bring out the best in students, that is the teacher could help students develop their strength and potential.’’ Speaker asked the girl with smile, ‘’ Do you want to be a teacher in future? If yes, I believe you’ll be a very good one.’’

With a view to the technology in the future being almost unpredictable, as the speech giver mentioned, the method of learning may be via a newly developed approach or technology, and teaching as well, which cause lots of problems being relevant to the field of teaching.

Hence the main thought of the speech was expressed, which is the abilities and thoughts teachers should bear to face the near future in order to adapt themselves or precisely speaking, the teaching methods, to an environment that requires new bloods with different skills and innovate ideas instead of simply being a database.

I was mesmerized by the conception of the teaching guideline, which indicated what was likely to be the trend in the coming future and how teachers could adjust to fit the aforementioned trend, and it shows the very essential value of a teacher and what they ought to give to students as well.

Also, the video clip rectified or precisely define the definition of “failure”. It’s not a person but an event. Things someone done doesn’t become worse just because he or she once fail at doing something, that is, a single event can’t show the very person who did this as a total success or a total failure.

As far as I’m concerned, I think that Taiwan aims to be a bilingual country or more must be undoubtedly carried out for reasons.

And the first reason is to communicate with people throughout the world, for English having become an “international mutual language” more than just “English”. Given that eastern cultural background and education nowadays caused lots of people have the penchant of avoiding speaking to foreigners for fear of the accent and fluency which might leave a relatively negative remark or impression on behalf of Taiwan on others, Taiwan must develop to a whole new stage to keep up the pace with the world, which is to implement, promote, encourage policies of the second “mother tongue” being learned instead of the second “language” to render people be polyglot, have the ability to communicate and thus could make Taiwan being seen, acknowledged and even reckoned other than just a region.

The second reason is that to build Taiwan into a much competitive country. Of course it may sound like everybody always saying that, but it surely will do the effect with the education system nowadays.

There are so many to mention and I’m not going to list them all. So I’ll discuss it in “how” to put it in practice.

And the very important thing is that to implement it from kindergarten or even earlier, as a result of the younger you learn a language, the easier it is, and hence it become a mother tongue rather than a foreign language. Therefore, education in infancy and childhood thus become much more significant.

Many will question about that what if the proper nouns discourage the students’ passion toward learning when it comes to chemistry, etc. In my opinion, it won’t matter as long as you find a way to combine the characteristic between Chinese and English, or you could just set up classes offered in English, Chinese, and both.

Apparently, the thought isn’t that mature yet, as well as the system and cultural background in Taiwan. Therefore, we still have a long way to go and it needs time to gradually adjust to the final goal. Though the promising outcome may take a plenty of time, it’s still worth it overall.

Things I Learn from the Lecture

In the lecture, the speaker talked about several features that future teachers should have. First of all, the future is full of things that don’t exist now and challenges that we can’t even think of. As a result, preparing specifically for something may not be enough. Instead, we should equip ourselves with skills that can help us in many different situations. And as a teacher of the future, this is also what we should keep in mind when teaching students.

With the help of technology, it will be very easy for students to learn whatever they are interested in on the Internet. Therefore, instead of simply providing knowledge, teachers should focus on helping students find out why and how knowledge can be used in their daily lives and in the future.

There are three aspects in 21st Century Learning: foundational knowledge, humanistic knowledge and Meta knowledge, including things like cross-disciplinary knowledge, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, life/job skills etc. Also, in the future, learning should be more learner-centered, which is to pay more attention to individuals rather than focusing on the whole class.

Thoughts on the Lecture

During the lecture, I was impressed by the speaker’s passion in teaching, and there is no doubt that everything he mentioned is very crucial. However, to me, the biggest question I have, is how can we turn these concepts into actions?  Thinking of my life in schools, I find it hard to think of a way to “teach creativity” or “teach problem solving skills”. Then it suddenly occurred to me that maybe I’m thinking this in the wrong way. We should be teachers of the FUTURE, so why do I keep looking back in time? I think that maybe the key to these is to keep in mind that the old way of teaching may not be suitable for the future, and we should always be open-minded to new things and try to adjust teaching methods to meet students’ need.

Another thing that impressed me in the lecture was the video clip about a “robot teacher”. In recent years, it has been debated that whether robots (or AI) can replace human teachers, and I once thought that maybe with the development in robots and AI, that might be possible. I’ve changed my mind recently, but to me, it is one of the teacher’s respond in the video that kind of answer this question for me. The teacher referred to the teaching robot as a “tool”, and her comment made me realize that maybe that’s exactly the role of a robot in school: a tool that can be used by human to improve students’ learning. Actually, if we think about the various characteristics of a 21st century educator mentioned in the lecture, I think the answer will be obvious, being a teacher of the future will take more than that.

Extended Thoughts

Unfortunately, the education in Taiwan tend to be test-oriented since the tests are still quite important to students’ future. Therefore, I think that maybe some changes in tests are also needed in order to really make some changes in the teaching methods. For example, maybe instead of testing students’ memory, we can test students’ ability to find useful information with high reliability and then solve the problem.

At that lecture, the speaker Prof.Timothy Teo told us about Teachers of The Future, which brought many thinking for me.

I thought nowadays education in Taiwan after the lecture. I think that education in Taiwan today lacks the element of "Learning by working". And the fact can easily lead students to suffer from great discomfort because of the difference between books and practical works, and even not until they do it did they find themselves that they are not proper to that, as in the field of engineering in the picture.

To such problems, I think that from the beginning of the elementary school, there must be some practical workshops, which can increase the experience opportunities and enhance each student's understanding of themself. So that they can find the most suitable career of them.

More than that, I also thought about the ture meaning about our education.

thought our education should lead a student to be a “person”, not just “ a brain which is filled with useless knowledge.” Our education is over put emphasis on the grades and ranks instead of the ture value of a child. And that often make a student stressed out, and they can’t understand why they need to accept education. Moreover, the students may even have negative influences due to the wrong emphasis by wrong educative ways.

In my opinion, I think that the way to solve the problem is to initiate the education about individual value, which includes a person’s moral and useful capabilities. I thought that was exactly what can help our students to face all the challenges of their lives, and what can let our students become people who have capabilities to contribute to our society.

Consequently, after the lecture, I have many thought of our education of our future. I hope I can do something to improve the situation.

What does it mean to be a teacher? Is it the one who explain to the students the contents, theories, quotations of the wise men and their literary products in the textbooks? Is it the one who express the cries of vexation, to utter the poisonous words of disrespectful hatred and to commence acts of physical violence to the students when they are to be at fault for their own flaw? Or is it those who ignite the spark of inspiration and become a beacons of lights for the students so that they shall be guided where they wanted to be? The definitions of what a teacher is or supposed to be are varied from different sources and contexts.

The time has change and the criteria to define a great teacher also changed. Nowadays teachers are compel to follow by-the-book level of instruction of modern-day schooling programs. Modern-day schooling program is a program that caused politicians, teachers, parents and students impeaching and protesting because this is a tool that stripped children of their creativity, their personality and most crucially, their dreams. Every person on this Earth are born differently, from different background, different gifts and they all think differently, so why does this sort of program force students to regurgitate information, reject their points of view, single solution is the solely correct answer as the options and choices are forbidden to be given, forcing them to take series of standardized exams where in the end they shall only seek severe competitions and a grade to rank them like a product from a factory, a rank that can only view a frame of a great picture that a student can be.

Nevertheless, changes are possible but it will take time and resources. First changes can start with teachers, teacher is by definition of Prince Ea, the most important job on the planet but got mistreated, antagonized and underpaid. An engineer can create buildings that can challenge the might of time and nature, a doctor can save countless lives and improve them, a lawyer can bring justice to those who are facing injustice and a teacher is the one who build the very foundation for these great and honorable professions. Teachers are deserving a better salary, let these educators know that they have earned what they deserve since the future of humanity is in their hands to mold into shape. The teachers are not just the one who teaches the students, they also are the heroes, the champions, the source of inspiration and most importantly they are the brightest examples of the student future self.

Second, the alteration of curriculum is a must, the world is changing rapidly while the future generation are forced to learn the insignificant knowledge of the bygone days. 21st Century Learning circle presented by “punyamishra.com” paved a clear pathway that can correct the errors that were made by the prior program. Fundamental Knowledge that every students must grasp so that they can build their own foundation of knowledge and strife further, this foundational level of understanding is the stepping stone, where they teach Core Contents with minimum and basic knowledge of scientific and arts subjects, digital literacy is also taught since we are living in the era of 4.0 industrialization where the more we know about machineries and how to use them the more valuable we are, cross-disciplinary must also be taught so that students broaden their horizons as they know there are many methods of application from what they have studied. Meta Knowledge is to motivate students to act from what they have learned, Joe Ruhl from Purdue University said that “Choices are important, we are wired for free will”, students get to make decisions, as they all must know choices have results (or consequences) and they have the rights to make those choices. National Education Association also pointed out the 4 Cs in Collaboration, Creativity, Communication and Critical Thinking are what classrooms of the 21st Century should be, instead of a traditional or viewed by some as old-fashioned teacher centered classroom should be replaced by student-centered classroom. This sort of classrooms opened a new way of teaching, instead of teach, teachers now can coach, can mentor, can guide and inspire students, as for example: In a class period, students can creatively come up with a plan or a map, they have to collaborate with their peers and collaboration need communication, and as they plan, they critically thinking of choices they can have or they can make so that the plan or the map can execute smoothly. The teachers only provide Core Content knowledge and some advices or answer some questions, this lessen the presence of the teacher and concentrate more on the presence of students. And final part of the circle, Humanistic Knowledge, where students learn how to lead a decent life. The world is a big place where opportunity collide with diversity, as stated above students come from various background, and in the era of 4.0 Industrialization, International Integration played a huge part in bringing countries together, and as students who pronounced the future of humanity, cultural differences must be understood and set aside so that they all have the opportunity to collaborate with discriminate. Ethical issues are also not to be overlooked, before students learn how to calculate or write a short essay, they must learn about human decency. History has proven that “great power comes with great responsibility”, take Adolf Hitler for example, he has the charisma to motivate people, a great strategic mind to control his army so that he can win thought-to-be-impossible battles, but he lack the code of conducts which drives him mercilessly slaughter millions of people with cold blood. As for students we must educate them to be better, show them that their gifts are for the advancement not the deprivation of humanity, let them know and remember that we human are driven by the emotion of love, of passion and compassion. And the practical life and work skills are to be emphasized since teachers are no longer play the center, the students will take the stage and before they can do that, teachers are to be teach them skills that are crucial in their daily life like cooking, sewing, healthcare and basic finance (so that they will not suddenly went broke). And as they are to proceed for their career, teachers are also requested to step in, to teach them the basics and the core of their professions, so that when the time comes, students now become the work force of the society, know what their missions are and how to complete them.

Third and finally, teachers also need to change, the introduction of characteristics of a teacher in the 21st Century introduced by George Couros and approve by Professor Timothy Teo completely reshape the idea of a teacher. The teachers now instead of just giving lectures, now need to start to care more about their students, as a teacher we let our students know that we can build a mutual trust and respect between student and teacher. We teachers shall not abandon nor left anyone behind, as we already have built our trust and bond, we will need to take all students weakness and strong points into the equation as we come up with the lesson plan so that all the students have chances to prove themselves and push them further when they encounter difficulties. The second characteristic that we learned that teachers can also be learners, and as an ex-teacher myself I can confirm the fact, my classes consist of students from all ages, all kinds of professions, and in each class I asked them to share their experiences in their work-study life, I have learned a lot from my students, as they have taught me about all kinds of knowledge in many work fields, things that I have learned so that I can have a more insight view on the matter and things that I will never have known if they haven’t told me.

For conclusion, the profession of teacher stand in the top of the chain is undebatable, but as an ex-teacher and will come back in the near future (after I got my certification and graduate from Tsing Hua University), teachers need to change as the curriculum makers are now start to heed the sounds of the desperation for educational alteration, we need to prepare ourselves that we can lead our students to the future they have dreamt of since they are in-fact the one who shall decide what kind of future humanity will have.

About education, I have many things to say. As a present student in a rapidly change generation, I believe that the form of education must follow up the age. As high-tech improve, teachers should also improve their teaching method. While students get to use cellphone or any 3C products in most of the time, boring textbook content can no longer catch the students’ attention. Instead of just stand in front of the classroom, I’m talking about all subjects, teachers can let student involved in the class straightly using ways such as presentation or class discussion. If possible, apply the theory that was taught in class will be awesome, which may make student focus on class more. In this edge of fast development, creativity becomes the most significant part of our capability. Therefore, teachers’ responsibilities was given an addition, that is, guide our creativity’s and maximize their possibility. I always appreciate those who gave me knowledge whether in school or not; however, I do like teachers or anyone who taught me methods rather than just knowledge itself. Nowadays, we can simply grab information through the internet, we no longer need to memorize everything in mind since putting too much information in mind may lessen our brains’ plasticity. This is a generation that know-how need to be maximize its usage, we always need to think the integration of knowledge in different field. I consider self-study important since what each student need varies. We shouldn’t give full responsibility to teacher cause in the end, it will be we ourselves that bare the consequence.

The speech today is a problem that I have been thinking for a long while. My younger brother and I had been studying in bilingual elementary schools when we were young. The school I had been studying in was always teaching us English by reciting vocabulary, grammar, and reading stories in the thick textbooks. At that time, we were separated into five grades by scores. If we didn’t get good scores in test, we will go down to the worse level. In the contrast, we also had the chance to level up. But after six years of learning, I figure out that the members in my class are almost the same, so as other classes. Many of my friends in worse classes told me that they just don’t care because they think they won’t be able to go up. So, they didn’t even try to improve themselves.

However, the school my brother had been studying in had only one class. They learn English by showing videos and active ways. Also, they were using the textbooks of American students. They learned science, arts, music, social studies instead of vocabulary, grammar and the things in normal Taiwanese textbooks. I think the knowledges they gain were way useful because they also learned how to use them in life. But the things I learned, it surely improved my English ability, only let me know how to answer in tests.

I think if we want to let students in Taiwan have a better ability in learning, just as the speaker said, we have to teach the things not only in textbooks but also those useful in daily life. If the teachers kept teaching students the things only in textbooks, the students will be inflexible and too stubborn. I hope there will be some changes in the future.
